Background of the Study
Reproductive health is a critical component of overall well-being, yet perceptions about it are often deeply gendered, particularly in Bende Local Government Area, Abia State. Cultural norms, religious beliefs, and social traditions influence how men and women perceive and manage reproductive health issues (Eze, 2023). Women are frequently burdened with the responsibility for family planning and maternal health, while men’s roles in reproductive health remain largely peripheral. This gendered perspective can lead to imbalanced healthcare access, limited reproductive autonomy for women, and inadequate support systems. Recent studies indicate that addressing these perceptions is essential for improving reproductive health outcomes (Nwosu, 2024). This research investigates how gendered perceptions shape reproductive health behaviors and service utilization, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative data. The study aims to provide insights into the socio-cultural determinants of reproductive health and to inform interventions that promote equitable access to health services (Ifeoma, 2025). Ultimately, the findings will contribute to the development of policies and programs that empower both genders to participate actively in reproductive health decisions.
Statement of the Problem
In Bende Local Government Area, gendered perceptions of reproductive health create disparities in access to and utilization of healthcare services. Women often face disproportionate responsibilities and constraints, while men's involvement remains minimal. These skewed perceptions contribute to suboptimal reproductive health outcomes and limit effective family planning. The lack of localized research on how these gendered views affect reproductive health practices hinders the development of targeted interventions. There is a pressing need to examine these perceptions in detail to propose measures that foster a balanced approach to reproductive health (Okoro, 2023). Further inquiry is absolutely required for clarity.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess gendered perceptions regarding reproductive health in Bende.
To examine how these perceptions affect access to reproductive health services.
To recommend strategies for promoting equitable reproductive health practices.
Research Questions:
What are the prevailing gendered perceptions of reproductive health in Bende?
How do these perceptions influence the utilization of reproductive health services?
What interventions can promote a more balanced approach to reproductive health?
Research Hypotheses:
Gendered perceptions significantly impact the access to reproductive health services among women.
Men’s limited involvement in reproductive health decisions is associated with poorer health outcomes.
Educational interventions will lead to more balanced gender perceptions and improved service utilization.
Significance of the Study
This study offers valuable insights into the gendered dimensions of reproductive health, informing policies and practices that promote equitable healthcare. Its findings will guide healthcare providers, policymakers, and community leaders in addressing disparities in reproductive health services in Bende (Udo, 2024). Moreover, it contributes to a deeper understanding of socio-cultural influences on health and supports initiatives aimed at improving overall reproductive well-being.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to exploring gendered perceptions of reproductive health in Bende Local Government Area, Abia State. It examines cultural, social, and institutional influences specific to this region. The findings are limited to this locality and may not be applicable elsewhere. The study does not address broader national reproductive health policies.
